Il movimento di liberazione animale ha affrontato negli ultimi anni numerose sfide e difficoltà, e in larga parte è fortemente cambiato rispetto al passato.
Dall’essere un movimento radicale, di base, che si opponeva apertamente a grandi associazioni e media istituzionali, è lentamente divenuto sempre più simile a ciò che una volta criticava. Una parte del movimento ha iniziato a considerare in modo prioritario l’opinione pubblica, modificando i propri contenuti al fine di adattarsi allo standard dei media, lavorando abitualmente con giornalisti e lobbisti, concentrando la propria attenzione nell’apparire “professionali” piuttosto che sulle cose che realmente intendiamo comunicare, su ciò che davvero ci interessa realizzare.
Sviluppi ed evoluzioni nel proprio modo di agire sono parte di ogni lotta, ciò nonostante non possiamo accettare il fatto che, se la priorità diviene ottenere il consenso del pubblico a tutti i costi, aspetti fondamentali come la solidarietà per i/le prigionieri/e ed il sostegno per l’azione diretta inizino ad essere largamente ignorati. Non riteniamo sia possibile accettare il fatto che questo movimento stia tendendo negli ultimi anni a voler negare le proprie origini e radici.
Dalla lotta per la liberazione totale, si è passati ad una strategia tesa all’ottenimento di nuove norme e leggi che, si presume, dovrebbero migliorare la condizione degli animali nella società odierna. Queste leggi vengono inevitabilmente richieste allo stesso Stato che ci opprime e controlla ogni giorno. Quello stesso Stato che si prende la libertà delle nostre compagne e compagni rinchiudendoli/e per anni, portando loro via tutto.
Riflettere su questo recente sviluppo del movimento necessiterebbe un lavoro a parte, e non intendiamo qui approfondire oltre questo argomento. Si è ritenuto però necessario menzionare questo aspetto per meglio comprendere perché questo lavoro è stato fatto: a seguito di questo cambiamento di strategia nel movimento, il supporto per i /le prigionieri/e ha iniziato lentamente a divenire un aspetto di secondo piano. Da questa considerazione abbiamo iniziato a lavorare al progetto ‘Shac ha fatto storia – Shac made history”.
La campagna SHAC è stata senza dubbio, con la sua lunga storia, la campagna per la liberazione animale che ha maggiormente subito l’attacco delle forze repressive. Ognuno/a di noi è stato/a ad un certo punto attivo/a in questa campagna. Ma nonostante i moltissimi individui impegnati nella lotta per la chiusura di Huntingdon in tutto il mondo, la repressione ha colpito solo alcuni/e.
Queste persone, che hanno pagato e stanno pagando la forza e la determinazione di questa campagna, necessitano tutto il nostro possibile supporto e sostegno. Gli individui che hanno perso anni della loro vita a causa di questo sistema oppressivo, e che le autorità stanno cercando di isolare dal movimento in ogni modo possibile con severe condizioni di libertà vigilata e dure restrizioni nella loro vita privata ed attività politica, non devono essere lasciati/e soli/e, a prescindere da quello che la ‘pubblica opinione’ possa pensare o meno.
É responsabilità del movimento aiutarli/e a resistere, a tenere la testa ed il morale alto.
Combattiamo la repressione, sosteniamo i/le nostri/e prigionieri/e, perché la solidarietà è ancora la nostra arma!

From being a grassroots, radical movement, that openly opposed big associations and media opinion makers, it slowly became more and more what we once criticized.
A part of the movement started to be blindly obsessed by ‘public opinion’, modifying the contents to fit the media standard, to work hand in hand with institutionalized journalists and lobbysts, focusing on appearing ‘professional’, rather than about what we really want to say and achieve.
Changes and developments are part of every struggle, but we can’t accept the fact that, if the priority becomes to get the consent of the public at all costs, fundamental aspects like solidarity for political prisoners and the support for direct action suddenly becomes largely ignored, we can not accept that this movement is way too often denying its very roots and origins.
The original movement for total liberation has been replaced by a movement more focused on obtaining new laws that should improve the conditions of animals in nowadays society.These laws are demanded to the same State that oppress and control us all. The same State that steals the freedom of our fellow comrades, that put them behind bars for years and takes everything away from them.
Reflecting on this recent development of the movement would need a separate work, and this is not the purpose of this zine. However, it is necessary to mention this aspect to better understand why this work was made: as a result of this change in strategy the movement’s support for prisoners has slowly lost it’s crucial importance. That’s the reason why we started the “SHAC made history – SHAC ha fatto storia” project.
The repression against the SHAC Campaign, during it’s long history, is one of the strongest our movement ever faced. Through the years, most of us have been active in this campaign. Despite so many individuals all over the world involved in the struggle against Huntingdon, repression hit just some.
These people, that are paying for the strength and the power of this inspiring campaign, deserve our full solidarity and support. These individuals have lost years of their lives because of this oppressive system. The authorities are trying to isolate them from the movement in every possible way, with strict bail conditions and hard restrictions on their political and personal life. They should not be left alone, in spite of what the ‘public opinion’ might, or might not, think.
We need to help them to resist and keep their heads and hopes up.
Let us fight their repression and answer with active support!
Let’s support our prisoners, because solidarity is still our weapon!
